History of Halloween

Updated: Oct 29, 2021

By Elijah Martinez

Halloween is a holiday where each year on October 31, people run around in their horrifying costumes, knocking on every door for some candy to snack on. What if I told you some of the history of this holiday. According to the information I found. “the tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts”. The day of Halloween marked the end of summer and marked the beginning of the cold winter. Traditionally, Halloween was originally called Hallows Eve. But over time, Halloween began to change: “Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats”. Halloween was a time of year often associated with Death. Samhain’s people celebrated on October 31 when it was believed that his ghost of the dead returned to earth. The history of this holiday called Halloween is quite interesting and there are even more stories of the tradition of Halloween if you look into it.
